"frontier" – western movies, the migrations and reworkings of the genre

by Maren Grimm

To remember oneself is not just to grasp for the past as one would go up on the attic or down to the basement and fish out a particular piece of a story of someone's life. It is more similar to the recognition of an experience in patterns and objects. As such memory and film maintain a close relationship, they both suspend chronological time. This lecture takes a look at the sociopathological conditions of the emergence of the western genre in Europe focussing on the post-fascist countries Italy, Germany and Spain.

Maren Grimm, Hamburg/Vienna is a filmmaker and lecturer at the academy of fine arts in Vienna.
