Esther Kempf: How to work with Illusions
"You could write the whole plot on a postcard. We do the rest."
Buster Keaton
How do I deal with illusions? This was a key question to fiction filmmakers like Buster Keaton or George Méliès in the early years of cinema. Nowadays Esther Kempf recalls, streches or discloses this cinematic mechanism. A talk with the young Swiss artist about working with furniture and found footage.
Esther Kempf (born in Cameroon) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and currently lives in Zurich. She was awarded by the Kiefer Hablitzel Foundation and the Dr. Georg und Josi Guggenheim Foundation. Bice Curiger (2009): "Esther Kempf has created new little monuments, each a kind of beggarly memorial to all the surreal realities to be discovered, which are all around us and which we never observe."
