Other Spaces of Cinema

by Simone Schardt & Wolf Schmelter

How do I look – to you, to myself, how do I appear, how am I seen? What are the ways in which I'm seen or can be seen, the conditions of my visibility? […] how do I look at you, at her, at the film, at myself? How do I see, what are the modes, constraints and possibilities of my seeing, the terms of vision for me? […] how do I look on, as the film unrolls from reel to reel in the projector, as the images appear and the story unfolds on the screen, as the fantasy scenario unveils and the soundtrack plays in my head?

Teresa de Lauretis: "Film and the Visible", 1991

The talk discusses notions of spectatorship and modes of subjectivation within the field of vision. Starting from our practice Kinoapparatom, an instant cinema on the move to present artist films at specific sites, we debate linkages and ruptures to Institutional Critique and the critique of representation. Specifically, the authors raise questions as: How are our subjectivities as spectators and producers constituted within institutional frameworks? How are we addressed as subjects by particular image productions? What kinds of potentiality are revealed by shifting modes of address?

Simone Schardt, artist and author and Wolf Schmelter, artist and researcher, are based in Zurich and Berlin.
